Architecture of Proximity

Author: Hinnerk Utermann, University of Applied Arts Vienna; Angewandte Wien

Abstract

Architectures of Proximity is an artistic research project that explores how we live together through shared spatial experience. It proposes that modes of coexistence can only be understood experientially and develops a practice-based methodology of “building as research.” Through 1:1 architectural models, the project creates constrained environments for encounters between two people, making proximity, interpersonal distance, and human interaction tangible.

Four installations serve as experimental settings for ephemeral, undocumented encounters, following the principle ichigo ichie. Grounded in personal, embodied experience, the project investigates how spatial situations can enable attentiveness, hospitality, and relational exchange, and how architectural models can function as open frameworks for gathering and reflection.
